Chat with me tonight, live, via video. Is this even a good headline for a blog post? I dont know. Do you want to know what Im like unedited? Read this blog post. I never post unedited, but my editor has a day job, and he has no time to deal with manufactured emergencies like this one, so Im just posting this post as is. Im supposed to be doing a web chat thing tonight. I had this idea that this would be a good format for me. And I had this idea that I could stick to a schedule. But look. Its the day of my video chat and I have not even announced it. Because Im nervous. Im nervous about a new format. I did a radio show and I hated it. That does not bode well for video. But I like speaking in front of groups. (I do it a lot.) And I like having conversations with blog readers. So it seems like maybe this video discussion or whatever it is might work. Okay. So you can sign up, and then tonight, at 9 p.m. eastern, you can ask questions to me live, and Ill answer them. On video. And Ryan Paugh will be there because, no kidding, the last time I did one of these alone I left in the middle. Sort of cancelled it. Or, cut it short, or whatever. Your future employer wants to know that you have the skills to be a high performer. And that you know what’s required to drive success and revenue. But what does a good sales representative resume objective look like? And how can you write a great one? We’re going to answer these questions in this writeup. Before we begin, let’s quickly cover the two types of resume objectives that you can write. Resume Objective Style Options There are two ways to present a resume objective. And for sales professionals, one of these methods is better than the other. The first method is more traditional. And that is to write a brief summary explaining what type of work environment you’re seeking. In this traditional method, you might be asking to be inside an environment that is conducive to doing great work. And conducive to you utilizing your soft skills. For sales representatives, you might be mentioning your social skills, collaboration skills, your influence skills or your interpersonal skills. By mentioning your ideal work environment, you can allude to these skills. Here’s an example of what the more traditional resume objective looks like: “Seeking an environment that is fast-paced, results-oriented, that allows sales professionals to use their best judgment along with pleasing our customers. And allows for the evolution of our products and services based on customer needs.” The second method is less traditional but more effective for sales professionals who have previous work achievements and previous work experience that shows results. Listing a summary of your previous work achievements, in bullet style format, is still considered a resume objective. And can be very effective in summarizing your work history for your future employer. Here is an example of what that might look like: Was part of a team of 5 sales professionals who were able to achieve more than $5M ARR in sales. Transitioned and trained our team to SalesForce as a CRM from a team who had no previous CRM system. Brought in more than 10,000 leads during 2019 of XYZ Company. Examples of Sales Representative Resume Objectives Below are a few examples of sales representative resume objectives using the more traditional method as well as the bullet-style method where you allude to your prior performance as a sales professional. “Seeking an environment that trains their sales professionals to be fast-paced performers that focus on the numbers. From being able to travel to customers, speak to them, address their needs, and sell them our solutions.” “Desiring to be part of an experienced sales team who knows how to address customer needs and turn leads into sales. Utilizing social skills, upset skills, and being able to turn relationships into revenue.” “Desiring a team that knows how to sell world-class products and services by influencing our customers in a positive manner. Being able to educate them on our solutions, learn about their needs, empathize with them, and make great relationships.” Here are some bullet-style resume objective examples: Achieved more than $500k ARR in 2018 at XYZ Company. Made more than 100 new relationships by networking at outside company events. Helped more than 50 customers find new features as part of our software suite, helping to upsell them. Was part of the first sales team to achieve our first dollar at XYZ Company. Developed a sales strategy on a quarterly basis. Set an annual revenue goal and got at least 80% to goal every year at XYZ Company. Sales Representative Resume Objective Tips The best sales representative resume objectives contain prior work achievements. Sales professionals are always going to be tasked with performance-based objectives. Which means you will be measured on your performance or your ability to sell. If you can allude to your prior work achievements or your prior personal achievements in your resume as well as in your resume objective, you can reassure your future employer that you know how to do the job and do it well.

Unlimited Vacations

Unlimited Vacations Unlimited vacation time . . . a new trend in the workplace. It’s an interesting time to be discussing this topic. Two weeks ago, I spoke with KUT about a Right Management survey that indicated that 70% of individuals did not use all of their vacation time in 2011. Why is Vacation Time Going Unused? Some individuals felt pressure (internal or external) to make sure they showed their commitment to work by taking less vacation days. Other individuals are allowed to rollover vacation days each year and might have been saving some days for 2012 when they will need extended vacation (honeymoon, maternity leave). Some individuals are awarded compensatory time for hours worked after 40 hours each week and used the compensatory time rather than vacation. Some individuals just don’t take a lot of vacation. They are wired to work more and vacation less. Whatever the reason may be, I would expect people to take less vacation time when unemployment is high. Another topic that we spoke about was whether individuals who did take days off really took a break from the job. Many individuals take time off and leave the office but are still plugged into the office through email or phone. They may call into meetings or answer emails while they are trying to relax. This, at times, defeats the purpose of vacation. Vacation is to truly relax and give individuals time away from work to become re-energized about their work. Is this a function of internal pressures (i.e. we want to be seen as a productive employee and worry about disconnecting from work), or external pressures (i.e. our boss never takes a true vacation and expects the same behavior from her employees), or a function of technology (i.e. we have the ability to work from anywhere so we do)? It can be one or more depending on the individual and the situation. Will Unlimited Vacation Policies Work? I love the idea. It is logical: each individual has different needs and can make vacation decisions based on their needs. On LinkedIn I saw an article speaking on the benefits of unlimited vacation days. An individual might not put off taking a vacation (even though she could really use it) for fear that she will run out of days if something comes up. Most individuals are aware of and can manage the work they need to accomplish each day and what they are responsible for. Unlimited vacation can be a very motivating factor for individuals who realize more control at work. It will work better for some companies than others and will be highly dependent on the company’s culture. You might think that people will hardly come to work if they have unlimited vacation. In some cases, maybe, but the opposite problem is more likely. Thus, the company must ensure that employees are encouraged to take vacation time and make it clear that this is not a policy designed to make people take less vacation. For employees, this will be a shift from the traditional workplace. The workplace is ever-changing with flexible hours, telecommuting, technological advances, increase in independent contractors, etc. I am eager to see how the policy plays out as more and more employers implement it.
