5 Ways to Take on More Responsibility at Work - The Muse

5 Ways to Take on More Responsibility at Work - The Muse5 Ways to Take on More Responsibility at WorkSo youre doing a good job at work. Your boss seems happy. And now, youre ready to take on more.Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone to take on more responsibility is a great way to grow personally and professionally. It can be uncomfortable and hard at times, but thats what will help you make real progredienz within an organization. So give yourself a challenge, and try these five ways to step up and have your colleagues see you shine1. Talk to Your BossGo to your supervisor and see if there are any additional projects you can work on. Make it a discussion rather than a direct question you can share your own career goals and talk about how you see yourself fitting into the companys future.Think about what skills or knowledge you want to develop, and see if theres an opportunity thatll let you do just that. If possible, have a few concrete ideas in mind so you can suggest areas wh ere you may be able to get more involved. If you dont have regularly scheduled meetings with your supervisor, try to get time on his or her calendar for the conversation. But if thats a long way off, mention it in passing and follow up. A simple Hey, I think I am ready for more responsibility and would like to help the kollektiv may be just what he or she needs to know to give you the opportunity.2. Look for Busy, Stressed Out Co-workersLook for the people who need help, be it in other departments or in the cubicle next door, and offer to lend a hand. Make sure that you dont get taken advantage of, though, or become a victim of a credit hog those colleagues who will attempt to have you do their extra work, and then take all the credit. Learn to identify and avoid these people. Also, be sure not to overwhelm yourself with others work. If youre risking neglecting your own responsibilities, youre going too far.3. Become an ExpertAcquire new knowledge continuously and stay on top of trend s or developments in your field. If youre seen as an expert in a particular subject, youre more likely to be needed for new projects coming up.One simple way set up a Google Alert for topics relevant to your industry, company, or gruppes area of responsibility. Pick your search terms, and any new articles featuring the terms youve chosen will be sent to your inbox in a daily update email. Another great option is to use Twitters news hashtags. When you find articles relevant to your teams work, send them out with a brief accompanying summary. Youll be helping all of your teammates look better and stay up-to-date on the latest industry news, which can gain you a lot of credibility as a team player. Remember though, when you send an article out to your team, make sure you anticipate any questions that may come up about what you sent.4. Be ProactiveSometimes you cant wait for someone else to give you the green light. Take initiative, and do what needs to be done before someone asks you ( or someone else) to do it. Start by identifying tasks that are falling through the cracks and completing them. Your foresight will be appreciated. If part of your planned activity involves reaching out to clients or other external members of your company, make sure that you have approval to do this. Jenn, I thought that a press search would be helpful here, and I wanted to reach out to Erik on the PR team is a simple way of confirming your team is okay with you reaching out, and also of communicating what youre doing so it doesnt end up being done twice.5. Start With the Fun StuffLastly, some workplaces have extracurricular activities you can get involved in, be it the softball team or the sustainability initiative. Show your leadership skills there and get to know more people at work as a first step towards more official responsibility. Plus, it can be good for your co-workers to get to know you outside of your traditional professional environment.

New ASME President Charla Wise Highlights ASMEs Mission Vis... New ASME President Charla Wise Highlights ASMEs Mission Vis... New ASME President Charla Wise Highlights ASMEs Mission & Vision in Her Presidents Dinner AddressJune 30, 2107 ASME President Charla Wise became the 136th president of the Society during the ASME Annual Meeting in Newport Beach, Calif., earlier this month.During her inaugural address at the Presidents Dinner earlier this month at the ASME Annual Meeting, ASMEs new president, Charla K. Wise, discussed the Societys mission and vision, as well as her hopes for ASMEs future as it continues with its strategic plan for becoming the go-to organization for addressing key technology-related issues.Wise, a consultant and an adjunct professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Michigan who had previously spent more than 25 years in high-profile positions at General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin, has been an active and dedicated supporter of the Society durin g her more than 10 years as an ASME member. A longtime member and former chair of the Industry Advisory Board, Wise has served in the Society in a variety of positions including member of the ASME Board of Governors, chair of the Strategic Growth Task Force, vice chair of the Committee on Honors, and member of the ASME Foundation Board.Given that history with ASME, Wise is naturally familiar with and committed to the Societys mission to serve diverse global communities by advancing, disseminating and applying engineering knowledge for improving the quality of life and communicating the excitement of engineering. ASMEs new President Charla Wise (left) with immediate Past President Keith Roe at the Presidents Dinner.Touching on the missions last point, Wise said, As quickly as ur world is changing and advancing, we need to stimulate and inspire the minds and capture the hearts and souls of our existing engineers and technical professionals, as well as those of future generation s of engineers to join us in accomplishing our mission to impact the world positively, through our solutions and technology.Wise also discussed ASMEs vision of being the essential resource for mechanical engineers and other technical professionals throughout the world for solutions that benefit humankind, noting that she shared this vision for the Society as well.Last year, when I ran for president, I told the Nominating Committee that my theme for this year would be Continuity, As We Move Forward, Together. And thats the beauty of the strategy that ASMEs Board of Governors has been working on over the past several years. It brings us continuity as we look to the future, especially over the next 10 years. It helps us move forward toward achieving our mission by having clear goals. It brings us all together we all have a common vision what I call a North Star for the Society. ASME immediate Past President Keith Roe reflected on his yearlong term as the Societys leader during his s peech at the Presidents Dinner.Much like the North Star, which has been used throughout the ages as a navigational tool because it remains nearly immovable in the sky, the Societys vision holds steady in front of all of us, Wise said. We all can keep our eye on the North Star (our vision) as we move forward on our ASME paths as individuals, as sectors, as groups. We all see how our paths may be somewhat separate, yet we are connected and integrated, helping each other, and doing our part to lead us towards success. As her speech drew to a close, Wise, addressing her fellow ASME colleagues in the room, said, We are the leaders to make our vision a reality. We are members of such an incredible team. I am always impressed and energized when I look at the credentials, the commitment, the energy and the dedication of this team. You are, and we have on our team the best of the best and we can make it happen.Earlier in the program, immediate Past President Keith Roe looked back on his 12-m onth term and highlighted some of the major milestones of that year, which included the launching of the new Engineering Festivals (E-Fest) program for engineering students, the introduction of new International Working Groups for pressure technology standards development in Argentina and China, and the development of workshops, webinars, Congressional briefings and other programs concentrating on ASMEs five strategic technologies pressure technology, advanced manufacturing, robotics, bioengineering and clean energy. One year ago, I pointed out that ASME is in the process of transforming our Society and that our focus was to develop content-based ecosystems that will help engineers find solutions for the worlds most pressing needs and challenges, Roe said. This transformation we hope will energize both volunteers and staff, in its partnership as high-performance teams, to raise our expectations of ourselves and everyone who helps us meet these challenges. This kind of transformation requires fundamental changes in strategy, operations, and worldview the kind that pushes us to action, that moves us from exploration of opportunities to a radical shift that leads us from the chaos of discovery to order, he continued. I promised you I would do my best to lead you there, as president. You still have that promise, as I look forward to continuing this work with Charla Wise and the leadership team for our next fiscal year.

How Technology Changes Legal Careers

How Technology Changes Legal CareersHow Technology Changes Legal CareersAs advances in law technology revolutionize todays legal landscape, the role of the legal professional has evolved. The automation of legal processes has prompted lawyers, paralegals, legal secretaries, and other legal professionals to become proficient at an ever-increasing array of word processing, spreadsheet, telecommunications, database, presentation, and legal research software. Law technology has impacted every aspect of the legal field, from the law firm and corporate practice to courtroom operation and document management. Law Firm Technology In law firms, electronic billing (e-billing) is gradually replacing traditional paper invoices. Technology has also become an important legal marketing tool and new law firm websites, and legal blogs spring up daily in cyberspace. Electronic case management has also changed how documents are handled. Firms are now storing voluminous case files electronically and employing databases to track, edit, search, distribute, and archive documents. Bickel Brewer, a Dallas-based law firm, illustrates the extent technology has changed legal processes. We image virtually everything that comes into the officeevery single piece of paper, even a elend then we send the images to our 24-hour staff in India, says William Brewer, III, the firms co-founder, and co-managing partner. This system helps organize all firm data and provides a constant universal backup to the firms onshore docketing system. Corporate Technology is equally important in corporate legal departments. Computer programs exist for almost every corporate function, including filing trademarks and patents, tracking directors stock holdings, preparing budgets, tracking subsidiary data, creating organizational charts, and monitoring outside counsel fees. Technology in the Courtroom E-filing - filing documents electronically with the court - has become commonplace and Federal and state courts are posting court filings on web-based databases, allowing counsel to access court documents remotely. A growing number of courtrooms are now equipped with all the bells and whistles of an electronic age. Built-in monitors and equipment facilitate the use of trial presentation software and other technology in the courtroom. Legal Professionals Lawyers, paralegals, and other legal professionals are using technology more than ever before, operating database applications specific to their practice area and using video conference tools and other electronic devices to complete daily tasks. While law libraries are not extinct, electronic legal research prevails as the most common method of legal research. Legal professionals use a wide range of legal databases to perform research, verify case law, and track data. Westlaw and Lexis/Nexis continue to be among the most widely used legal research databases, although new software products are constantly entering the market. E-Dis covery Federal Rules of Civil Procedure enacted in late 2006 have further fueled the need for tech-savvy legal professionals. The new Federal Rules require parties in litigation to preserve and produce documents that exist only in electronic form (e-documents) such as e-mails, voicemails, graphics, instant messages, e-calendars and data on handheld devices. The time-intensive process of reviewing and producing millions of pages of electronic information has spawned a new host of litigation database management tools. This database technology allows legal professionals to image, code, analyze, review, and manage the massive amounts of electronic evidence, a process called electronic database discovery (EDD). E-discovery and the growing use of electronic litigation database tools have even given birth to a brand new profession, the litigation supports professional, to implement and manage these new technology tools. Although the conservative legal industry has been slow to embrace tec hnology, it now infiltrates every aspect of law practice. The American Bar Associations legal blog directory provides more information on technology in the legal field.

5 Ways for Branding Yourself Online... Fast

5 Ways for Branding Yourself Online... Fast5 Ways for Branding Yourself Online... FastHere are 5 free resources that you can use to establish or extend your erreichbar brand quickly and economically.By Kirsten Dixson and William ArrudaIf you havent figured out that you are being Googled in your job search just as frequently as you are Googling your business contacts, then it is time to enter the world of modern career management. Whether you want to or not, you must develop and maintain some kind of professional online profile and recognize that people are forming opinions about you based on what they find after typing your name into a search engine.Your own approach to online reputation management will be dependent on your career goals and personal comfort level with becoming visible online. Ideally, everyone would invest in a customized online portal for his or her personal brand (see examples at kirstendixson.com/portfolio.html ). When you have your own blog or website designed, y ou have total control over how you present yourself. However, if you have limited time or funds, you may be wondering what you can do to establish or extend your online brand quickly and economically. Here are five free resources (some also have paid services)1. www.Naymz.com.Think of Naymz as the 411 to your online identity. Not only can you create a profile, but you can also point people to all the other online content that you want them to see. This includes your other social media profiles (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.), websites, articles and relevant links. You can upgrade your account to have Naymz buy your name in the paid search results so that you get guaranteed first page placement on the leading search engines. A paid listing can be especially helpful if you have a common name, digital dirt or are impatient to show up in the natural listings.2. www.BusinessCard2.com. BusinessCard2 is a virtual business card that is designed to show up in your search results. In addition to a downloadable vCard with contact information, you can include a bio, recommendations and attachments such as a resume, presentations, articles and photos.3. www.LinkedIn.com.LinkedIn is a must for every business professional, and its not just a networking tool. Create your profile at LinkedIn, and make it public. Chances are that you already have a LinkedIn profile, but you havent gotten it ready for public consumption. LinkedIn has good Google juice, so your public profile will typically rank high in the results when someone searches for your name. (If you have a common name, be sure to include qualifiers as keywords in your profiles. When people type your name into the search box and they get millions of results, they will begin to narrow down their search by the name of your latest employer or MBA program, your specialty, job title or location.) You can control what elements appear on the public Internet versus the content that only gets anzeigegerted to your LinkedI n contacts. Write a keyword-rich, easy-to-digest profile that showcases your value to your target audience and request endorsements from contacts that support your claims. The best way to get endorsements from people is to go ahead and endorse them. LinkedIn will prompt them to return the favor so you dont have to. Recruiters value LinkedIn endorsements because you cannot edit them (but you can decide not to use them). Also keep in mind that the size of your network will display as part of your public profile and judgments may be made about having too many or too few connections. The right quantity for you is purely subjective, but know that the intention of LinkedIn is to connect with only those you actually know and would recommend to others in your network.4. www.VisualCV.com.VisualCV takes having your resume online to the next level by allowing you to back up your achievements with proof of your performance. Think of it as an online, multimedia executive portfolio that is templa te-like in design (your site looks like all the other VisualCVs). You can upload or link to relevant content that supports your claims and also control who sees what.5. www.Alltop.com.If youve read my book or any of my previous articles, you know that I strongly advocate publishing articles or posting thoughtful blog comments related to your area of expertise. Searching Alltop will help you find the websites and blogs that would be effective in reaching your target audience. To avoid possible confusion and more work later, dont start using any of these online identity management resources before you take the important first steps of discovering and articulating your personal brand. Ask yourself, what is my unique promise of value or value proposition, and how can I differentiate myself from others who are vying for the same opportunities? Write one compelling social networking bio that you copy and paste consistently across all of your online profiles. To make a great first impressio n, you will also want to get a professional headshot since people are often meeting you online before they meet you in person.Join William Arruda, known as The Personal Branding Guru, and Kirsten Dixson, recognized as the authority on online identity for career success, for a strategy session. The coauthors of the careers bestseller, Career Distinction Stand Out by Building Your Brand, are partnering up again to give you real, actionable advice on how to enhance your search strategy.

8 Career Trends for 2016

8 Career Trends for 2016 With the New Year here in full force, many employees are setting their sights on new goals, new jobs, and new careers. One question I keep hearing is Whats new in 2016?Let me answer that with a quick rundown of eight important career trends well see in 20161. Multiple CareersIts becoming mora and more common (and acceptable) for employees to switch jobs every 3-5years. In fact, its almost expected. In the past, this was frowned upon by many, but in 2016, it will be more the norm than ever before.2. Boomerang WorkersWith the morepeople switching jobs more frequently, this was bound to happen. Its more and more typical to see an employee leave a company and be rehired a few years later. And why not? The employee gains valuable experience and can negotiate a higher salary upon return. Its a win-win, as the organization gets someone who already has knowledge about and experience with the company.3. Work/Life BalanceAs more millenni als join the workforce, the focus on work/life balance is increasing. Millennials want to do meaningful work and they want to have personal lives, too. They arent lured in by big paychecksif that means theyll lose all of their personal time.4. New Work PerksIn an effort to hit home with younger workers, more companies are beginning to offer creative perks, including student loan repayment, fertility and adoption assistance, flexible work hours, and remote work arrangements. Theyre also offering more onsite perks like free lunches, laundry, and childcare.5.Better Maternity LeaveTheres also been a big push to give workersmore maternity and paternity leave and to give them more options in this realm, too. Some companies are allowing employees to work less hours after a child is born without quitting altogether. Others are adding the option for dads to also take time off alongside moms.6.Contract WorkersIn the past, consultants were reserved for large corporations. They would hire con sulting firms that smaller businesses could not typically afford. Today, more individuals have become independent consultants. Some were forced into those roles after a layoff, while others chose to leave the corporate world to gain control and fulfillment.
